The workers will return next week to the Mirafiori plant in Turin to run production lines for two models: the Alfa Romeo Mito hatchback and the Lancia Thesis sedan, a Fiat spokesman told Reuters. They and thousands of others had been sent home on reduced pay as the car maker shuttered its plants in the face of a sharp decline in sales.

Begun last year, the measures adopted by Fiat to halt production and send workers home run into March, the report said.

To help the industry survive the crisis, Italy’s government has offered incentives for new buyers. The incentives, along with perks offered by manufacturers, have started to produce results, according to Federaicpa, a federation of car dealer associations.

The number of enquiries made at dealerships in February have already doubled those for the previous two months, it told Reuters.
