Opel parent General Motors on Wednesday declined to comment on media reports it was about to close its plant in Antwerp, Belgium.

The US carmaker remained tight-lipped as to the future of the its Belgian base, widely predicted to be under serious threat.

“No decision has been taken so we can’t say anything further,” a GM spokeswoman told just-auto. “We will have to wait until [Opel/Vauxhall CEO] Nick Reilly comes up with his plan.”

Some 2,300 staff work at Opel’s Antwerp plant and, although regional government aid in the form of loan guarantees as well as a sale and leaseback deal was offered late last year, the factory’s future appears bleak.
