UAW members at New United Motor Manufacturing (NUMMI) – a GM-Toyota JV in California – have approved a proposal which requires them to take Fridays off without pay through to August 7.

Kyodo reported that union members at the NUMMI plant in Fremont, California, voted 86.5% in support of the proposal.


The furlough is part of a work-sharing program Toyota earlier decided to implement at some North American factories to protect jobs amid production cuts due to dwindling sales.


Toyota’s new car sales in the United States fell nearly 40 percent in February from a year earlier while GM recorded a 53 percent year-to-year fall in the same month.
