The CAAC data confirms earlier reports of a February sales surge on the back of government incentives designed to stimulate car sales.

Total vehicle sales — including cars, buses and trucks — rose 25% year-on-year to 827,600 units in February, the first time it surpassed the 800,000 level since June 2008.

Passenger car sales in China are forecast by analysts to grow at a more moderate rate of roughly 10% in March.

“China’s car market will grow 10% this year, if there is good growth of 5 to 10% in March,” Nigel Harris, Ford’s chief of sales and marketing in China, told Reuters this week.
