“It seemed impossible to hold the works council meeting in Reims … for obvious security reasons,” a spokeswoman for the German-owned company told AFP, adding that the meeting would be held in Nice on Tuesday.

Last week Continental tyre workers burst into a management meeting in Reims and pelted their bosses with eggs to protest the closure of their plant at Clairoix, north of Paris. Outside other workers had staged a symbolic lynching of an effigy of the company’s director.

On Wednesday, Continental workers burnt tyres in the streets of Paris, where they had come to meet with advisors of president Nicolas Sarkozy to discuss the closure of their plant.
