Volkswagen is to produce a special edition version of its Jetta model to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain.

Although no details are yet available concerning any name for the vehicle, the Jetta brand has been chosen given its best-selling status for Volkswagen in the NAFTA region.

“We will produce a special version for the festivities in Mexico,” a Volkswagen spokesman told just-auto.

“We chose the new Jetta as we will launch the sixth generation of the model this summer – we have sold nine million vehchiles so far.”

The anniversary edition represents something of a departure for VW, which normally launches special versions to commemorate milestones such as numbers of vehicles sold.

“It is unusual but it is a market decision and therefore of course each market makes its own decision – it reflects what is important and they are free to do so,” added the spokesman.

Volkswagen invested US$1bn last year to expand its Puebla plant in Mexico as it sees increasing volume for the Jetta, but also the new Beetle and Beetle convertible.

The anniversary Jetta will be available only in the Mexican market.
