Volkswagen de Mexico will cut seven days’ production up to the end of May as a result of the slowing of the US car market.

The company will temporarily lay off 1,000 Mexican workers who will receive half-pay for the days not worked.

VW is Mexico’s leading car producer, building 114,536 units in the first quarter of 2001 ahead of General Motors’ 100,525. VW was Mexico’s second largest vehicle exporter for Q1, shipping 91,011 units behind DaimlerChrysler’s 92,756.


In 2000, VW Mexico produced a record 425,000 units, 340,000 of which were exported. The Jetta (Bora) and Beetle are the main models produced.
