The batch of 500 OEM tyres was shipped five months after the plant began operations last February 2010.

Chennai is Apollo’s ninth manufacturing unit worldwide and its fourth in India. It was built in a record 14 months after construction began in November 2008. The plant received the necessary certifications and clearances for OE supply just four months after commencing production.

Apollo Indian operations chief Satish Sharma said: “Once completed Chennai will be our largest manufacturing unit, globally. The plant is still under construction, however once the first phase is completed it will produce around 16,000 passenger car tyres and 6,000 truck-bus radial tyres a day, enabling us to cater to the demands of the growing automotive sector.”
