Nissan Motor said it would spend US$600m to upgrade its two plants in Mexico and start making three new low cost cars there, positioning the country as its supply hub for Americas markets.

The carmaker plans to start assembly of the Micra early next year, adding a sedan and an MPV by 2013.
Nissan expects to produce the three models at a rate of 300,000 units a year in Mexico with 80% going for export to other markets in the Americas.
The new models will be assembled at Nissan’s Aguascalientes factory in northern Mexico which has an annual capacity of about 350,000 vehicles annually.
The company’s second plant at Cuernavaca has a capacity of 250,000.
