A senior Toyota Motor executive has said the automaker wants to actively consider marketing electric vehicles in China but provided no details.
Both Mitsubishi (i-MiEV) and Nissan (Leaf) have confirmed they’ll sell EVs in China and local manufacturers including BYD are also entering the sector. BYD has just bought a stake in a lithium miner.
Speaking at a forum in Chengdu, in southwestern China, Toyota’s vice chairman Katsuaki Watanabe made no mention of a specific EV timeframe or models.
The Chinese government has expressed interest in reducing urban pollution and decreasing its dependence on oil by replacing petrol cars with electric models.
