The Tokyo Shimbun daily said Toyota also was raising global production 8% to 6.45m vehicles this year due to the impact of government subsidies and tax incentives for new fuel efficient cars.
Toyota domestic sales rose 9% year on year in August though group global output – including Hino and Daihatsu – was off 9.9% and exports from Japan were down 40.2%.
The Japanese government last April began offering up to JPY250,000 (US$2,789) in subsidies to buyers replacing older cars with low-emission cars as part of the country’s largest-ever economic stimulus package, Reuters noted.
Toyota has since asked the new government to extend the deadline for these subsidies by two years to the end of March 2012.
