Citroën
has begun vehicle production in three of the world’s largest countries – Russia,
Brazil and Iran – with assembly of the Xsara Picasso compact MPV soon to begin
in China.

Citroën has commenced production of up to 35,000 units a year of the Xsara
Picasso at the PSA Group’s new assembly plant at Porto Real, Brazil. An additional
factory currently under construction on the same site will manufacture around
50,000 engines per annum.

Also, up to 10,000 Xsara Picassos are set to be built annually at the Wuhan
factory in China. In 2000, the company sold 52,000 vehicles in China, taking
nearly 9% of what is potentially the world’s largest market.

At least 3,000 Berlingo vans will be built each year near Rostov-na-Don in
Russia, in co-operation with the Russian carmaker Doninvest, while an agreement
made with the Iranian vehicle manufacturer SAIPA will see the production of
around 18,000 Xantia cars by the end of the year.
