As part of the consultation process commenced at a European employee forum meeting last week, the General Motors Manufacturing (GMM) facility in Luton – which builds commercial vans in a joint venture with Renault – has now begun its own period of consultation between unions and local management, GM said on Monday.

“One element of the current plan is a proposal to reduce GMM Luton’s headcount by 354 employees to right-size the business in line with the 2010 forecast production volume,” General Motors Europe said in a statement.
“However, this number is subject to further local consultation. Plant and trade union senior leadership will now work together to develop the details of the plan in order to support the future strategy for GMM Luton.”
GME last Friday announced that a third shift would begin at the Ellesmere Port Astra factory in 2011, preserving all 2,200 jobs there.
