Fiat has released the first official picture of the Fiat 500 Abarth, the new top sports version which will make its world debut at the Geneva motor show next month.

Exports will include right-hand-drive markets and Fiat’s Australian importer, Ateco Automotive, has confirmed and early-2009 launch ‘down under’.


The new car was developed by the Fiat Group Automobiles Style Centre as spiritual successor to of the legendary rear-engine 500 Abarth of the 1960s, and will have a turbocharged ‘Fire’ 1.4 16v petrol engine, which delivers a maximum of 99kW at 5,500rpm and peak torque of 206Nm at 3,000rpm in ‘sport’ mode. In ‘normal mode, torque is reduced to 180Nm at 2,500rpm).


This new engine also meets future Euro 5 emissions laws.


The 500 Abarth also has Fiat’s new TTC (Torque Transfer Control) system, which improves the transfer of drive torque to the driven wheels.
