Scania chairman Leif Ostling told the newspaper that each brand has a ‘different clientele’ and that the companies would need to be kept separate in order to avoid damaging the brands.

FTD noted that Ferdinand Piech, the supervisory board chairman of MAN and Volkswagen, which is the largest shareholder in both MAN and Scania, had said that a merger of Scania and MAN could lead to savings of about 1bn euros.

Mr Ostling now says that the figures quoted for potential savings are virtually always exaggerated, the newspaper noted.

The Scania chairman also emphasises that the company has worked on a large number of cooperation projects with MAN that have not developed as expected, the report added.
