Toyota Motor Corporation on Thursday held the official ceremony to mark the start of construction of its second car plant in India on the outskirts of Bangalore in India’s Karnataka state.

TMC senior managing director Akira Okabe said: “We hope to establish in Karnataka a firm base for our monozukuri culture—which combines production technologies based on the Toyota Production System and human resources development—and to be able to contribute to the growth of India through our activities in Karnataka.”


The second plant for local production and sales unit Toyota Kirloskar Motor will have annual capacity of 100,000 passenger vehicles (including a new compact vehicle) when it begins operations in 2010.


Sustainable plant features, shared with the existing factory, include energy consumption reduced through the introduction of production technology with lower CO2 emissions, use of renewable energy sources, such as biomass, solar and wind power, tree planting on the site, waste water recycling , use of water-borne paints, and not producing any landfill waste.


The TKM joint venture was established in 1997 by TMC and the Kirloskar Group and currently buiilds the Corolla and the IMV (utility vehicle) series Innova minivan, with annual production of 52,000 vehicles in 2007 (an 18% year-on-year increase). It employs about 3,000.
