So-called ‘leaked’ photos of Volkswagen’s redesigned ‘Mark VI’ Golf are now bouncing around the internet a day or so ahead of the release of ‘official’ details – one UK enthusiast magazine is promising an ‘exclusive photo shoot’ for Wednesday.

The photos appear to be the usual Photoshop specials used in online press packs these days and show a five-door that is essentially a rework of the current Golf V with the new Scirocco coupe’s nose and an updated dashboard similar to that in the Eos and Scirocco coupe.

A report on a car enthusiasts’ website said there would be three and five door versions, possibly a cabriolet, plus a GTI which “may” get a glass roof. There might be a new 1.6-litre engine developing around 200 bhp and a new entry level engine below the 1.4-litre TSI in the current model and there were also suggestions of a 1.0-or 1.2-litre 75hp engine.

A German auto trade paper said the new entry-level Golf would be priced from about EUR16,500 in Germany, about EUR200 euros more than the current entry-level model.

It would also have new diesel engines with common-rail injection technology and new Euro 5-compliant petrol and diesel engines up to 28% more fuel efficient than current engines.

These would include a 110hp, two-litre diesel that uses 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres and emits 119g/km of CO2, which would put it in a low annual road tax band here in the UK which uses a CO2 emissions-based system.

That report also said the redesigned Golf would be offered with adaptive chassis, automatic distance control and parking assistance for the first time.
