The increase was attributable to more deliveries in South America (up 48% to 1,141 units), Asia (30% to 1,108) and eastern Europe (25% to 1,675).

The economic downturn in Europe (up 7% to 4,358 overall but off 2% to 2,683 in the west), as well as high fuel prices, continued to adversely affect new truck demand, Volvo said.

Deliveries in North America last month (up 11% to 1,083) reflected temporarily higher build rates while recovering production losses during the strike earlier this year. But North American demand remains low.

In contrast, demand in South America remains strong and deliveries last month rose 48% to 1,141 units.
