Maruti Suzuki’s exports to Algeria have now passed 50,000 units, and the African country is its second largest overseas market.

“Exports to Algeria reached 50,462 with the last shipment from Nhava Sheva port. The Netherlands is the highest export destination with over 67,700 units,” a company official said, according to Asia Pulse.


The company exported 15,070 vehicles last financial year versus 8,651 units in 2006-07.


Maruti’s M800 – based on the early 1980s Suzuki Alto – is the top export model for Algeria, accounting for over 26,000 units. Other models exported to the country include the latest Alto (over 13,800) and the Zens (over 10,600).


Among non-European markets, Algeria is the biggest market, followed by Chile, Sri Lanka and Nepal. Algeria has taken over 5,000 units this fiscal year, followed by Chile with over 3,800 vehicles.


Europe buys 56% of Maruti exports. The Netherlands was followed by Italy with 41,000 units to date and the UK (over 34,000). Germany and Hungary have each imported over 20,000 Maruti Suzukis.
