GME said the new model would have some Insignia styling and a wrap-around interior with wing-line sweep that links the instrument panel to the door.

Platform and engines will be new and technical features will include the front camera system used in the upcoming Vectra-replacing Insignia, which combines traffic sign recognition with a lane departure system, improving occupant safety and potentially helping drivers avoid fines. Next generation adaptive front lighting (AFL) will also be shared with the Insignia.

Most UK-market Astras will continue to be built at GME’s Ellesmere Port plant near Liverpool.

The current car is also sold in the US as a Saturn but currency movements have affected its pricing and profitability there.

GME and arch-rival Volkswagen both launched their competing Astra and Golf in the same model year last time round but VW has already revealed its redesigned Golf VI, sales of which start in a couple of months.
