“The really interesting future markets are found in India, China and Russia. For those markets we need an inexpensive car, for price is the main factor there,” Wittig said, according to Agence France Presse (AFP).

The report said he gave no clear indication of when the new car might be launched.

The newspaper reportedly commented that Skoda Auto could take inspiration from Renault’s bargain basement model, the Logan, produced in Romania’s Dacia plants. The cheap car was initially targeted at emerging markets in eastern Europe and Africa but has also sold well in western Europe., notably in France.

Skoda’s smallest model is the B-segment Fabia which has just been redesigned and made a little larger.

There have been several recent reports suggesting that the Czech VW unit is considering developing a low-cost model smaller than the Fabia, primarily for emerging markets.
