Renault’s locally-built Logan has gone on sale in (right-hand drive) India with a choice of both petrol and common rail diesel engines.

Petrol model (65hp 1.4- and 75hp 1.6-litre) prices start at INR428,000 $US9,940; GBP5,026 while 84hp 1.5-litre diesels sell from INR547,000 ($12,705; GBP6,424).

Mahindra Renault, a joint venture between local vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra and France’s Renault, plans a two-phase launch.

Phase one will see dealerships in 10 cities taking orders from 14 April while outlets in another 15 cities will start taking orders “by May”, the JV said. First deliveries will be made four weeks after the order is placed by the dealer.

The Logan arrival marks both Mahindra’s entry into the Indian passenger car segment – it previously sold only utility vehicles and tractors – and Renault’s entry into the fast-growing Indian market.

Indian supplies of the model, which Renault designed for emerging markets and already sells under the Dacia and Renault brands elsewhere, will come from Mahindra’s plant at Nashik which has been expanded to produce 50,000 units a year. The cars will be branded as Mahindra and Renault.

The automakers said the Logan “redefines its segment in terms of spaciousness as well as performance, technology with the latest generation dCi common rail engine. It has been designed for the Indian market incorporating contemporary styling and design.”

Mahindra & Mahindra vice chairman and managing director Anand Mahindra: “The Logan is a milestone for us as it marks our entry into the most competitive segment of the automotive market. The global quality platform of the Logan with its unmatched features makes it a landmark for the Indian car industry.

“The strengths of Renault and our passion for outperformance and customer centricity have offered a product that will appeal to the evolved Indian customer.”

Renault president and CEO Carlos Ghosn said: “Today signals a new step in Renault’s global expansion. It marks the start of Renault sales on the Indian market and sees the first right hand drive version of Logan created to meet the needs of our Indian customers.

“I would like to congratulate the Mahindra-Renault team here in India for demonstrating how much can be achieved in a very short period of time.”

Mahindra Renault managing director Rajesh Jejurikar highlighted the Logan’s claimed fuel economy: “The Logan packs in the aspirations of the Indian car lover and sets standards in every aspect, space, safety and engine performance. Add to this [its] fuel efficiency – 16 to 19 km/litre [for the common rail diesel engine model] and 10 to 13 km/litre with [the] petrol engine. The Logan delivers on our promise of great quality at a stunning price.”

The automaker also claimed the Logan has best-in-class boot (truck) capacity of 510 litres.

A driver’s airbag is standard and changes for Indian driving conditions include an upgraded air-conditioning and heating system designed to suit the extreme climatic conditions that prevail in the sub-continent.

Since the initial left-hand-drive launch in 2004, almost 420,000 Logans have been sold worldwide, Renault said. It is now available in 51 countries on five continents.
