Fitment of electronic stability control systems (ESC or ESP), should become mandatory in the European Union (EU)from 2012.

EU vice president Günther Verheugen told a German car magazine that the benefits of stability systems are undisputed. The EU is therefore preparing legislation to make ESP mandatory for new passenger cars.

Anti-lock brakes are already compulsory in the EU and, in contrast, the US government has already introduced legislation that will require all vehicles under five tonnes to be offered with ESP. From September 2011 it should be fitted as standard.

Measures to introduce mandatory ESP legislation were first announced in the EU’s automotive industry policy framework communication on 7 February this year.
