According to the Welt am Sonntag newspaper, Gabriel has developed a mandatory ‘climate passport’ for all new cars. The move means that car buyers will be able to see the climate impact of their potential new car purchase at a glance. They will be able to easily compare the emissions of cars within segments and take that into account when deciding which vehicle to purchase.

The transport ministry has welcomed the proposal that CO2 values should be colour-coded, red, orange or green. Red would be the most highly polluting vehicles, but it is not clear whether least polluting vehicles within a segment could be awarded an orange or green rating, even it they are a high polluting segment, such as SUVs.

Germany’s automotive industry trade association, Verband der Automobilindustrie (VDA) is skeptical of the scheme. It would prefer European Union regulations rather than another national system.
