After a decrease in September, Argentine vehicle production rose in October, writes
Rogério Louro Alves. Car makers produced 18,211 vehicles last month, an
increase of 9.4 percent over the 16,638 units made in September.

But, compared with the 29,310 units produced in the same month of 2000, October
production was off 37.8 percent.

Exports stimulated the recovery last month. In September, car makers exported
only 8,905 vehicles; the worst result of 2001 so far. But 13,543 Argentine-made
vehicles were sold to other countries in October, a month-on-month increase
of 52.1 percent. Exports fell 5.5 percent compared with October 2000.

Argentina’s economic crisis continued to affect local vehicle sales which
decreased 3.4 percent, compared with September, to 13,314 in October.

October sales were off 52.4 percent compared with the same month a year ago
when 28,000 vehicles left showrooms.
