Colombian vehicle importers and distributors sold 6,094 new cars in October, the second consecutive month this year that the 6,000 mark was reached, writes Juan Carlos Vargas. Month-on-month sales grew 3.3 percent. General Motors sold over 1,900 units for a market share of 31.2 percent. Next came Renault with 1,192 units (19.6 percent), Mazda (668; 11.0 percent), Daewoo (503; 8.3 percent) and Hyundai (420 units; 6.9 percent).
The year-to-date 2001 table shows the same brand order: GM again leads with 16,811 units and 32 percent followed by Renault (9,064; 17.2 percent), Mazda (6,093; 11.6 percent), Daewoo (5,214; 9.9 percent), and Hyundai (3,784; 6.9 percent).

Total sales for the first 10 months of 2001 reached 52,546, 3.3 percent more than in the same period of 2000. Comparing this year with last, the fastest-growing segment was taxis, up 12.6 percent from 6,803 in 2000 to 7,663 in 2001. SUVs performed worst, down 19.9 percent from 5,849 in 2000 to 4,395 this year.
