According to the Detroit Free Press, the US Energy Information Administration said that this was the first overall decline in emissions since 2001. A total of 7.08bn tonnes was emitted.

The decline was put down to a warm winter and increased use of natural gas instead of coal.

CO2 emissions from cars and trucks rose 0.3% to 1.19bn tonnes. This represents around 17% of total CO2 emissions by the US.

Including trucks and air travel, CO2 emissions from transportation rose slightly to 2.01bn tonnes.

The US accounts for around one fifth of the world’s emissions. While UK greenhouse gas emissions average 13 tonnes per person, US national emission average 21 tonnes per person.
