BMW
AG plans to increase by one third the number of cars it delivers each year within
the next six years or so, Chairman Joachim Milberg said at the Frankfurt Motor
Show today. He added that BMW would also increase its margin on sales to well
over six percent this year, writes just-auto.com deputy editor Graeme Roberts.

In remarks prepared in advance of his press conference, Milberg said that BMW
"is moving into a dimension absolutely new for the company". "We
have launched an unprecedented product and marketing offensive… in the process
expanding our exisiting and highly attractive model range even further in the
market," Milberg said.

"Our latest business figures for the first eight months of this year confirm
that the BMW Group is going the right way with this strategy and product offensive."

For the eight months to the end of August, BMW sold over 596,000 BMW and Mini
models up nine percent on the same period in 2000 (only about 500 of the total
were Minis; all retailed in the UK).

"We therefore expect a total sales volume for the whole of 2001 of more
than 900,000 cars within the group," Milberg said. "This equals an
increase in our overall sales volume by more than nine percent over the year
2000, so far our record year."

Milberg said that BMW would introduce 20 new models and three new engine series
in the next six years, virtually doubling its passenger vehicle range.

"This will increase both our deliveries and sales in the coming six years
to an even higher level than ever before. The number of units delivered to customers
will be up by approximately one-third. This will in turn boost our sales into
a new dimension of more than DM 100 million or over 50 billion Euros,"
Milberg said.

The objective, he added, was for BMW to be the industry’s most successful premium
manufacturer.
