Workers from the factory have now started an extended four-week Christmas shutdown, giving them time to consider a redundancy package being offered by Vauxhall.

Employees are being offered payments well above the statutory minimum, plus a car, or the chance to transfer to the Vauxhall Astra plant at Ellesmere Port, Cheshire or the General Motors van factory in next door to the Vectra factory in Luton, Bedfordshire.

Union leaders are finalising arrangements to fly to the Swiss city of Zurich in the New Year to protest to Vauxhall’s European bosses.

Ananova says that Luton South Labour MP Margaret Moran, who said she was still “absolutely livid” at Vauxhall’s decision, is to meet the Prime Minister this week to discuss the impact of the 2,000 job losses.

“I don’t want to raise any false hopes, but we will carry on fighting alongside the workforce, investigating every avenue to try and reverse the decision,” she told Ananova.
