July car sales in Colombia fell 8.15% due to the transportation strike that
stopped the country for almost two weeks, according to Econometria S.A., the
Automotive Committee auditing company.

July was the fourth worst month of the year with only 5,041 units sold, writes
Juan Carlos Vargas. Despite the bad month, year to date sales are up 1.35%,
compared to this time last year.

GM led the car market in July with 27% (1,360 units) followed by Renault (20,7%
and 1,046 units) which is the fastest growing brand this year thanks to the
launch of the locally-assembled Symbol and Clio II and the imported Series II
Megane station wagon.

Mazda is ranked third (11.1%, 560 units); Daewoo (9.9%, 502) is still losing
market share (it ended 2000 with almost 13.5%) in fourth place and Hyundai (8.0%,
404) was fifth.

In July, passenger cars increased their market share from 56.3% to 57.2% while
SUVs dropped from 11.3% in Jully 2000 to 8.6%.
