The growth followed a 21.4% increase in sales in 2005, to almost 4m units, and a 15% increase in 2004.
The Chinese market, once dominated by a few makes, is become increasingly competitive.
The January leader was Shanghai GM, with sales of 28,200 units, followed by Shanghai Volkswagen (22,100), Beijing Hyundai (21,800), Chery (21,700) and Dongfeng Nissan (20,700).
