GM vice-chairman Bob Lutz, speaking to the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce in New York, has hinted that GM, in its negotiations next year with the United Automobile Workers union, would be asking for significant concessions, the New York Times reported.

The paper noted that GM executives have generally shied away from remarks about what they may seek in the talks.


“We just have to open it up all in that contract,” Lutz reportedly said. “The summer of ’07 is going to be kind of a watershed year where we really have to make a fundamental change in a lot of the cost structure of doing business in the United States.”


After the speech, Lutz told the New York Times the likelihood of a strike at Delphi was “less than 10%,” adding, “A strike benefits no one.”
