Nippon Steel Corporation announced that it plans to invest US$ 3 billion to build a new hot strip steel mill in the US, as part of the Japanese steelmaker’s broader plans to invest US$ 11 billion to modernise and strengthen its production capacity and increase its competitiveness in the country.

The investment will be carried out by the company’s wholly owned local subsidiary, United State Steel Corporation (US Steel), which it acquired in 2025. The new steel mill will be built at the company’s Edgar Thomson Plant, part of the Mon Valley Works in the state of Pennsylvania.

Nippon Steel confirmed that with this new investment, it will replace aging equipment with modern steelmaking technologies while increasing annual production capacity from around 2.2 million tons to 3.5 million tons of sheet steel. The new facility will enable the company to meet demand from a wide range of industries, from the automotive and home appliance industries to the energy sector.

Advanced production equipment will be installed at the new mill, including new walking beam furnaces and an in-line slab sizing press, which will help improve productivity, save energy, and provide more consistent quality, which the company said will contribute to the stable supply of high-quality steel products to our customers.

Construction will begin immediately after all necessary permits and legal formalities are completed, with initial production scheduled to start in late 2029.
