Hyundai Motor held an inauguration ceremony for its newly built smart manufacturing facility in Talegaon, near the city of Pune in India’s Maharashtra state. The occasion also marked the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) and the South Korean automaker’s entry into the Indian market.
Hyundai said the new facility “represents a strategic expansion of Hyundai Motor Group’s (HMG) manufacturing footprint in India and a core driver of its future growth.” The facility has an initial production capacity of 170,000 vehicles per year, bringing the group’s overall annual production capacity in the country to 1.4 million vehicles, including 824,000 units per year at Hyundai’s facility in Chennai and 431,000 units per year at Kia’s plant in Anantapur.

The Pune plant, which is scheduled to be expanded to 320,000 units per year by 2030, features flexible production systems capable of supporting multiple vehicle models, including internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid vehicles, “ensuring adaptability to evolving market demands.” It also has an engine shop with an initial production capacity of 150,000 units per year.
Hyundai confirmed that the Pune plant began operations with the production of the all-new Venue sub-compact crossover vehicle for domestic sale and export to more than 35 overseas markets, further strengthening India’s role as a global export hub for HMG.
HMG’s chairman, Euisun Chung, said in a statement: “India remains one of Hyundai’s most important and strategic markets globally. The inauguration of the Pune plant reflects our long-term commitment to India’s growth and our confidence in its bright future. HMIL’s milestone of 4 million cumulative vehicle exports (since 1999) demonstrates the global competitiveness of Indian manufacturing and highlights India’s growing role within HMG’s worldwide operations.”
Hyundai confirmed that the Pune plant is one of HMG’s most advanced manufacturing facilities globally, integrating Industry 4.0 technologies, AI-enabled production systems, advanced quality-management processes and Hyundai Motor’s E-FOREST digital manufacturing platform.
The company also pointed out that “the facility utilizes AI-driven analytics, predictive maintenance, AI-based quality inspection and defect detection, digital simulations and immersive AR workforce training to enhance manufacturing quality, productivity and safety. Its flexible production lines are designed to support multiple vehicle models, including ICE and hybrid vehicles in the future.”
HMIL’s CEO and managing director, Tarun Garg, stated: “The inauguration of our Pune plant marks the beginning of HMIL’s next chapter of growth in India. We will invest INR 11,000 crore (US$ 1.16 billion) in phases in this facility. Beyond expanding manufacturing capacity, the facility will drive industrial development, innovation and employment generation in the region. Supporting this vision is a strong regional supplier ecosystem, with 55 supplier partners having already invested nearly INR 4,600 crore in the state. Together with tier-II vendors, the ecosystem has created more than 18,000 employment opportunities in Maharashtra, reinforcing the region’s emergence as a key automotive manufacturing hub. As we celebrate 30 years in India, we remain committed to creating long-term value for our customers, partners and communities.”
Hyundai said that it is also “committed to contributing to India’s future through innovation, research, electrification and talent development. The company is working with Indian institutions and partners through industry-academia partnerships, battery and electrification research initiatives and future mobility programmes to help shape the next chapter of sustainable mobility.”
