JSW Greentech, the commercial electric vehicle arm of India’s JSW Group, has launched a new brand called Ampstar, marking the group’s entry into commercial mobility.

The new brand will cover the design, manufacture and sale of electric buses and trucks in India.

It has been structured to extend beyond vehicles alone, encompassing charging infrastructure, operating solutions, financing and after-sales support.

Customers will be able to choose from power configurations spanning 150kW to 500kW, alongside a range of ownership and payment models including outright purchase, leasing and battery as a service (BaaS).

JSW Group chairman Sajjan Jindal said: “When we decided to enter electric commercial mobility, I saw it as an act of nation-building – moving India’s people and goods on power generated within India, rather than fuel sourced from outside.

“We cannot control global oil prices. But we can control how much we depend on them. If I had to put our ambition for Ampstar in one sentence, it’s this: we want Ampstar to be a catalyst for changing the way India moves.”

Production will take place at a 90-acre facility at AURIC (Aurangabad industrial city) in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, which the company has described as India’s “largest” integrated EV manufacturing site, with annual capacity for 15,000 electric buses and trucks.

According to the company, the plant will feature India’s “first” pre-treatment and electro-deposition line for bus manufacturing, alongside an automated truck-cabin assembly line and an integrated battery ecosystem.

JSW Greentech has developed the software, algorithms and underlying architecture for the vehicles’ electric drivetrains in-house, which it says allows the vehicles to be tailored to individual customer requirements.

The vehicles feature a dual cooling battery system and monocoque chassis, designed for Indian road and climate conditions.

The Ampstar launch comes after JSW Group and Volkswagen Group signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding earlier this month, covering a proposed alliance in passenger vehicle operations in India.
