The Tata Motors owned Range Rover brand has added an all-electric model to its range for the first time.

The much-anticipated model was delayed around a year, with analysts speculating that the delays reflected last minute product and engineering changes to leave Range Rover Electric better positioned in the rather challenging nascent luxury EV segment.

The new model was driven the equivalent of 38 times around the world during physical testing, with more than 250,000 hours of virtual tests undertaken – more than any previous Range Rover.  

The UK-made Range Rover Electric is available to order starting at GBP154,070 in the UK, making it one of the most expensive luxury electric SUVs on the market. It is almost GBP50k more expensive to purchase than the entry petrol version.

However, the US market is likely to be offered a cheaper variant.

Range Rover said the new model exemplifies Jaguar Land Rover’s flexible propulsion strategy, joining mild‑hybrid, plug‑in hybrid and ICE models on the same MLA architecture – all manufactured at Solihull in the UK.

Two 260kW motors ‘V8 levels of power’ with up to 550PS and 850Nm of torque and up to 372 miles (WLTP) range.

A double‑stacked 118.5kWh NMC battery with 800‑volt technology and split‑charging enables claimed DC charging from 10‑80% in 22 mins or adding 137 miles (220km) in 10 mins (WLTP). 

The Range Rover Electric can climb slopes up to 45 degrees, while lower centre of gravity and twin‑chamber air suspension enhance driving dynamics, Range Rover says (though details on gross weight for the RRE are hard to come by).

Range Rover Electric is anticipated to be the most patented Range Rover ever, with 300 patent applications filed, including ThermAssist heat management technology and Range Rover’s design of battery and motors made at JLR’s Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in the UK. 

JLR’s wider manufacturing network, including its Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton, will support Range Rover Electric production. The site now produces battery packs and electric drive units alongside internal combustion engines, making it the UK’s largest internal combustion engine and electric powertrain production facility.
