The new engines for rear-wheel-drive vehicles, including those sold in the United States as the Infiniti G35, are 10% more fuel efficient than the VQ engine used in the existing Skyline models and Fairlady Z [350Z] sports cars, Nissan claimed, according to Kyodo News.
They also rev smoothly to a class-topping speed of 7,500 revolutions per minute, the company added.
The new Fukushima plant, which has been constructed inside an existing production facility, will build the 3.5-litre VQ35HR and 2.5-litre VQ25HR engines and has capacity of 160,000 units a year, the company said in a statement cited by the news agency.
