Hyundai Mobis Company, the main automotive components subsidiary of South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group, announced that it has partnered with three technology leaders to strengthen its position in the next-generation global vehicle display market.

Hyundai Mobis confirmed that it has launched the ‘Quad Alliance’ with three European companies that have specialist technologies in their respective fields, for the development and production of Holographic Windshield Displays (HWD).

The three companies joining the alliance include Germany’s Zeiss Group, which Mobis said possesses world-class optical technologies; Germany’s Tesa, a leading tape adhesion company; and France’s Saint-Gobain Sekurit, Europe’s largest automotive glass manufacturer. Hyundai Mobis confirmed it plans to establish a collaborative ecosystem with these companies, with the aim of putting HWDs into production by 2029.

Hyundai Mobis explained that HWDs are an innovative technology that uses the vehicle’s windshield as a display without the use of a separate physical screen, enabling drivers to view driving information without distracting their gaze. Diverse driving information and infotainment images are projected precisely on the windshield at eye level using a special ‘Holographic Optical Element’ (HOE) film laminated onto the windshield glass.

Hyundai Mobis said that the HOE film used for the HWDs “has a transmittance of 92% or higher (clear glass level) and an overwhelming brightness exceeding 10,000 nits (twice the level of outdoor LED billboards), providing clear image quality even in bright daylight environments. By leveraging the precise light redirection feature of HOE, the system is designed to prevent the driver from viewing the passenger-side of the screen. This allows the passenger to safely enjoy various infotainment features like video viewing and gaming even while driving. This technology maximises driving safety and space utilisation and is expected to emerge as a core technology for future mobility.”

Within the Quad Alliance, Hyundai Mobis will oversee the design and integration of the HWD system, including the image-projector, leveraging its expertise in vehicle interface solutions. Zeiss will handle the optical design and development of the HOE film, while Tesa will ensure reliable and precise mass replication of holographic films and St-Gobain will handle the precision process of bonding the film to the windshield glass.

Jung Soo-kyung, the head of Hyundai Mobis’ Automotive Electronics Business Unit, said in a statement: “Through this core technology that unlocks the future of automotive displays, we will provide differentiated value to our customers. We will closely collaborate with global partners through to the mass production phase to maximise our technological competitiveness and firmly establish our image as a leader in innovative technology in the global market.”
