The South Korean automaker Kia Corporation said it plans to relaunch its sales and distribution operations in Malaysia at the beginning of 2026 through a new wholly-owned subsidiary, after its contract with its local distributor, Bermaz Auto, expired at the end of November 2025.

The Korean automaker’s new subsidiary, Kia Sales Malaysia Sdn Bhd (KSM), is gearing up to begin operations on 1 January 2026, with the aim of rebuilding confidence in the brand by offering a refreshed, more engaging experience to its customers. The company also plans to expand its dealer network and strengthen its product line-up in the local market.

KSM managing director, Emily Lek, told reporters: “This is an exciting time as Kia re-enters the Malaysian market as a stand-alone entity. No longer represented by a distributor, the brand is now led by the principal with full control over our voice, values and vision. With strong systems and a clear plan in place, we are ready to bring back the true Kia brand experience.”

A spokesperson for the new company said in a statement: “Our target is to grow at a sustainable pace for the long term. It is not so much about being the fastest-growing brand, but rather a brand that cares about our customers, our dealers, and the Malaysian automotive segment.”

Kia also has a majority stake in a local joint venture with Bermaz Auto, called Kia Malaysia Sdn Bhd, which manages production of the Carnival MPV, the K4 sedan and the Sportage and Sorento SUVs for the local market. Malaysia is also the location of Kia’s Asia-Pacific headquarters, overseeing the company’s regional operations outside of South Korea.
