South Korean electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer Samsung SDI Company announced that it has joined forces with BMW Group and US battery technology company Solid Power Inc, to collaborate on the development of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). ASSB’s offer greater safety and higher energy density compared with current lithium-ion batteries, providing EVs with longer driving ranges and weight reduction.
Under the three-party arrangement, Samsung has agreed to supply ASSB cells featuring solid electrolytes developed by Solid Power, while BMW will develop modules and packs for ASSB cells. The three partners will evaluate the performance of ASSB cells, and integrate them into BMW’s next-generation evaluation vehicles.

Samsung pointed out that the agreement is particularly significant in that the three companies “have established a practical collaboration system and a model for global value chains for ASSB cells, paving the way for their commercialization by bringing together complementary expertise in cell manufacturing, automaking and materials development.”
The deal also builds on a long-running partnership between Samsung SDI and BMW, which has been in place since 2009, expanding their collaboration into a new “arena.”
Stella Joo-Young Go, Executive Vice President of the ASSB Commercialization Team at Samsung SDI, said in a statement: “Technological competitiveness in batteries will ultimately lead to innovation in electric vehicles. Samsung SDI will work closely with great global partners like BMW and Solid Power to take the lead in commercializing ASSBs.”
Martin Schuster, Vice President Battery Cell and Cell Module at the BMW Group, said “With Samsung SDI joining our partnership with Solid Power, we gain significant momentum on our path toward advancing the development of new battery cell technologies. This global collaboration is another proof point of our overarching goal: to always be in a position to offer our customers state-of-the-art battery technology.”
