Autoliv has announced plans to establish a joint venture with Hangsheng Electric (HSAE) to develop and produce advanced automotive safety electronics for the Chinese market. 

The venture is set to be headquartered near Shanghai, with manufacturing close to several of Autoliv’s existing locations in China.

Product development will target systems featuring “hands-On Detection, pre-pretensioner mechatronic integration and electronic applications for seatbelt systems and driver units”. 

The partners said the collaboration will combine Autoliv’s experience in automotive safety with HSAE’s capabilities in vehicle electronics to provide integrated solutions for both Chinese and international carmakers operating in China.  

The joint venture aims to enhance current offerings while supporting future technology development in the sector.

HSAE president & CEO Yang Hong said: “The joint venture will be driven by technology and innovation, harnessing China’s advanced supply chain to deliver cutting-edge safety solutions and highly reliable products for both Chinese and global customers.  

“We believe this partnership will serve as a benchmark and catalyst for China’s automotive industry, accelerating its transformation from ‘large’ to ‘strong’ and supporting its journey toward high-quality, sustainable, and global growth.”   

Autoliv, through its group companies, develops, manufactures and markets protective systems including airbags, seatbelts and steering wheels for major global automotive manufacturers, as well as mobility safety solutions for commercial vehicles and electrical safety applications.  

The company operates in 25 countries, runs 13 technical centres and employs around 65,000 people. Sales in 2024 totalled US$10.4bn. 

Meanwhile, HASE specialises in infotainment systems, driver environment tech, and intelligent vehicle solutions.
