Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is planning to introduce two additional plug-in hybrid models in Germany this year, reported Reuters citing the company’s regional managing director in Europe Maria Grazia Davino.

The move forms part of the firm’s broader strategy to expand its product offering in Europe.

Davino was cited by the news agency as saying at the Reuters Automotive Conference in Stuttgart: “Not everyone is ready for electric. We need something else to convince the customer.

“Every month, we find the best balance between what the customer wants and what makes distribution successful.”

The company is restructuring its European operations following initial challenges, including limited dealership presence, inadequate market familiarity, and the absence of plug-in hybrid models.

To address these issues, BYD is establishing national sales companies across Europe to improve distribution, customer service, and locally relevant marketing.

Davino said: “This localisation effort is a big investment… you have to build everything.”

She added that establishing a comprehensive network would take several years.

Currently, BYD’s sole plug-in hybrid offering in Europe is the Seal DM-i, which features a small petrol engine to recharge the battery and extend range.

“In the near future, we will have two pillars: one fully electric, and the other DM-i,” Davino added.

In addition to the new hybrid models, BYD is also planning to launch its entry-level Dolphin Surf and expand its high-end Denza range in Europe.

Davino added: “We want to do things right, in Germany and in all the markets in Europe. We are known as a company that moves fast.”

Earlier this month, BYD Auto made its debut in the Swiss automotive market, marking another step in the global expansion.

The company unveiled three models: the all-electric Seal and Sealion 07, along with the hybrid-electric Song Plus.
