Volkswagen plans to unveil three electric concept cars at the Auto Shanghai event in China, scheduled from 23 April to 2 May.
The German automaker’s three Chinese joint ventures will each present a new concept car at the fair, marking the firm’s “In China, for China” strategy.

FAW-Volkswagen will showcase an electric notchback model, while SAIC VOLKSWAGEN will present a B-segment electric SUV equipped with range extender technology (EREV). Volkswagen Anhui will displaying a fully electric SUV.
All three concept models, which fall under the category of new energy vehicles (NEVs), represent Volkswagen’s new China-specific approach in both technology and design, with development times reduced by over 30%.
By 2027, Volkswagen aims to launch over 20 models in this segment.
Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer said: “Our ‘In China, for China’ strategy has put us on the right path. Our aim is to remain the leading international automaker in China – even in the age of the intelligent connected vehicle.
“We have everything that it takes to be successful: shorter development times, strong partners, sophisticated local development, production and infrastructure as well as the right products and innovations for our Chinese customers. That’s exactly what we will prove with our near-production concept cars in Shanghai.”
In another development, Volkswagen Group reported a 1.4% increase in global vehicle deliveries to 2.13 million vehicles in the first quarter ending 31 March 2025, with a notable 7% decline in China.
However, growth in North America, South America, Western Europe, and Central and Eastern Europe offset this downturn.
The firm’s battery-electric vehicle (BEV) deliveries worldwide grew by 59% to 216,800 in Q1, compared to the same period a year ago.
In Europe, Volkswagen’s BEV sales more than doubled, and the company maintained a strong market position in the US. However, in China, BEV sales fell by 37%.
Recently, Volkswagen and Chinese technology firm Horizon Robotics agreed to expand their collaboration in the area of advanced intelligent driving technologies.
