General Motors has officially opened its Performance Build Centre in Wixom, a suburb of Detroit, dedicated to producing high-performance engines for low volume, specialist vehicles. The automaker invested $US10 million in the facility.

The first engine variant to come from the centre will be the LS7 V8 engine for the Z06 performance package offered with the new Chevrolet Corvette.


The centre can produce 15,000 engines a year and they will be made by specially trained workers.


In a manner similar to that at Ford premium sportscar subsidiary Aston Martin, one technician will build a complete engine from start to finish. The flexible manufacturing concept means that throughput of different engines can be quickly adjusted to address shifting market demand.
