The plant at Bochum, in the Ruhr District, is one of four Opel sites in Germany, where, for months, workers have feared job losses

Opel manager Carl-Peter Forster reportedly said Bochum must be more cost-effective.

Deutsche Welle noted that employee delegates and management have been negotiating redundancy terms since last year when Opel outlined plans for 10,000 layoffs – a third of its workforce.

The new model, the five-door Astra is already assembled at a GM plant in Belgium and at Ellesmere Port in England.
