LG Energy Solution (LGES) said it had agreed to work with US chip maker Qualcomm Technologies to develop diagnostics for its battery management systems (BMS).

LGES said BMS are essential for managing the “safe and healthy battery usage environment of customers and consumers. They use various battery related data such as current, voltage and temperature to ensure optimal performance, enabling more sophisticated battery use including detecting and preventing problems before they occur”.

BMS with diagnostics were expected to become increasingly important as new vehicles will feature more infotainment systems, such as video streaming, online shopping and road information and autonomous driving features.

The two companies planned to explore developing products that combine LGES’ battery diagnostic software with features and functionality of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis platform to create a BMS which would help extend EV battery life cycle.

The pair had also agreed to explore developing a BMS based on the Snapdragon Digital Chassis platform and additional artificial intelligence (AI) processing blocks to increase computing power 80 times while also advancing battery analysis algorithms through AI technology.

LGES also said it would explore developing BMS diagnostics which support AI hardware and software used on Snapdragon Digital Chassis.

LGES added it planned to combine its existing battery technology with AI hardware and software used for Snapdragon Digital Chassis to provide BMS functions such as edge AI-based features which did not require communication with the server.

The company said it planned to share technology with EV manufacturers.
