Zeekr, the Geely-owned premium electric vehicle brand has unveiled a lithium iron phosphate (or lithium ferrophosphate – LFP) battery that it has developed to support fast charging.

LFP batteries are said to be safer and last longer than lithium-ion batteries, but their energy density is lower – a significant technical obstacle to overcome in getting them to market with good performance characteristics.

At a battery plant owned by Zeekr’s parent Geely Holding Group in the province of Zhejiang, Zeekr said its upcoming 007 model would be the first model to be equipped with the batteries. It says they charge sufficiently within 15 minutes for a driving range of 500 km when matches to an 800-voltage electric system.

Zeekr currently uses lithium nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries supplied by CATL.

CATL has also launched fast-charging batteries.
