A report carried in the Bangkok Times (24th November) says Toyota topped the vehicle
sales ladder in the main Asean auto markets combined – Indonesia, Malaysia, the
Philippines and Thailand – during the first three quarters of the year. Proton
was in second place. The research undertaken by Automotive Resources Asia gives
Toyota a market share of 22% with Proton on 18%. Asean’s big four markets managed
total vehicle sales of 714,684 units in the first nine months of the year, an
increase of 57% on the same period of last year. All four markets recorded strong
gains in the period against year-ago sales levels: Indonesia +312%; Thailand +30%;
Malaysia +22% and Philippines +20%. However, there was a pronounced weakening
of vehicle demand across the region in August and September in response to fuel
price increases and the slow improvement of the regional economy.
