The new model was developed and engineered in Europe for local customers.
UK buyers will be offered three electrified powertrains: 1.8 and two-litre hybrid electric (HEV) models to start plus a two-litre plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) version to follow next spring.
Manufacturing facilities at Toyota’s plant in Sakarya, Turkey, have benefited from new investment of EUR308m (GBP266.5m). The operation has become the company’s first European centre for plug in hybrid vehicle production: the new line has capacity to assemble 75,000 battery units annually.
New measures minimise energy consumption including new paint shop technology which reduces CO2 emissions, zero carbon ventilation systems and the use of solar power.
