It has multiple JVs with automakers including Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai Motor and Stellantis.

The new factory cost $50m and was expected to create over 150 local jobs, Factorial said.

It will house a 200MWh line, expected to be the largest solid state battery assembly operation in the US.

CEO Siyu Huang said: “This facility will enable us to manufacture cells to meet the needs of our automotive partners and progress our mission to commercialise solid state batteries.

“We’re also proud to contribute to the [US] onshoring of battery manufacturing for EVs and advancement of battery innovation for a differentiated supply chain.”

Earlier this year, Factorial received United Nations 38.3 safety certification enambling it to ship its cells to automakers overseas. The certification is a requirement for the safe transport of lithium-ion and lithium metal batteries.

Executive chairman Joe Taylor said: “Automaker demand for American made batteries is high [so they can] produce electric or hybrid vehicles that qualify for incentives.

“Our facility will manufacture automotive size solid state batteries at preproduction speed and volume, illuminating a clear path to mass production and reaching economies of scale.”
